Independence Day – September 9

Not many people know this, but September 9 is Independence Day in one of the most beautiful countries in the world – Andorra. This small European country of around 77,000 people, located between France and Spain, gained its independence on September 9, 1278.

History of Independence Day in Andorra

The history of Andorra is closely tied with that of its neighbouring countries – France and Spain. Until the early 13th century, Andorra was not a sovereign state, but rather a feudal territory that was jointly ruled by the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix.
However, on September 8, 1278, the Count of Foix ceded his rights to Andorra to the French King, Philip III. And on September 9, 1278, the Bishop of Urgell also recognized the French King as co-prince of Andorra, declaring the small country as independent of both the Bishop and the Count. And thus, Independence Day was born.

How is Independence Day Celebrated in Andorra?

Although Andorra may be a small country, it is full of pride and patriotism. Every year on September 9, the two co-princes – the French President and the Bishop of Urgell, visit Andorra to participate in the celebrations.
