What is National Unity Day?

National Unity Day was first celebrated in 2026 BS (1969 AD) when King Mahendra declared it a national holiday. It was originally called National Unity Council Day and was celebrated on the third day of Magh, which falls on 17th of January. In 2052 BS (1996 AD), the date was changed to 1st Magh to coincide with the formation of the National Unity Anthem. Since then, it has been celebrated on this day every year.

The President and Prime Minister of Nepal also deliver speeches on this day, highlighting the importance of unity and diversity in the country.

People from different communities and ethnicities come together to participate in rallies, parades, and cultural programs that showcase the diversity of Nepal. Schools and colleges organize events where students perform nationalistic songs, dances, and skits.
