Observed Every Year: December 9th is International Anti-Corruption Day

International Anti-Corruption Day: A United Effort Against Corruption!

Corruption is a cancer that gnaws at the roots of democracy, hinders economic growth, and sustains inequality. It undermines trust in governments and institutions and erodes social values and justice. Every year, on December 9th, we observe International Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness and mobilize efforts against this global menace.

Corruption and its Impact

Not confined to any one sector, corruption has far-reaching effects on society, economy, and environment. It disproportionately harms the poor, women, and children. It also leads to human rights violations and stifles political participation and fair competition. International anti-corruption day offers a platform to promote integrity, accountability, and transparency that are necessary for development, peace, and security.

Anti-Corruption Day in Action

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the International Anti-Corruption Day campaign in collaboration with governments, private sector entities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. Each year, the campaign adopts a unique theme, providing a framework for global and local initiatives to tackle corruption. This year, the theme is “United Against Corruption: For Development, Peace, and Security,” emphasizing corruption’s role in hampering progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The campaign calls for a collective response to promoting the rule of law, fighting illicit financial flows, preventing money laundering and organized crime, and strengthening legal frameworks and systems. It encourages citizens, businesses, and organizations to actively participate in promoting anti-corruption measures and learning more about corruption prevention and reporting mechanisms.

A New Normal: The Pandemic and Corruption

The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the vulnerabilities and challenges nations face in managing corruption. The health crisis has magnified corruption risks, mainly through misappropriation of vital resources, bribery, favoritism, and fake goods and services. International Anti-Corruption Day demands urgent action to address these challenges and renew commitments to integrity, transparency, and accountability.
