Featured ImageOn July 17th, we remember and honor the legacy of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, a brave and visionary leader who played a pivotal role in Somalia’s fight for independence. With his unwavering determination and strong leadership, Hassan inspired a nation and transformed the course of Somali history forever. As we commemorate this important day, let us take a moment to reflect on his life and contributions to our country. Born on April 7, 1856, in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, Mohammed Abdullah Hassan grew up to become one of the most influential leaders in Somali history. Hassan was a prolific writer and poet, using his talents to spread awareness and mobilize his people against foreign rulers. In the late 19th century, Somalia was divided into various territories under the control of European colonial powers, including Italy, Britain, and France. Hassan saw the suffering and oppression of his people under foreign rule and took up arms to lead a resistance movement. In 1897, Hassan founded the Dervish State, which aimed to unite all Somali territories and establish an independent Islamic state. Under Hassan’s leadership, the Dervish State successfully repelled several attempts by the British and Italian forces to conquer and colonize Somalia. Hassan’s military tactics, including the use of guerrilla warfare and guerrilla diplomacy, were considered ahead of his time and were later studied and adopted by other freedom fighters. Despite facing numerous challenges, including famine and disease, Hassan and his Dervish army fought for over two decades, keeping Somalia free from foreign rule. On July 17th, 1920, the Dervish State finally signed a peace treaty with the British, marking the end of the conflict and recognizing Somalia’s independence. Hassan’s legacy continues to inspire and unite Somalis, and his vision of a united Somalia remains a powerful force in the country’s politics and culture. In honor of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan Day, many cities and towns in Somalia hold parades, cultural events, and ceremonies to pay tribute to the leader. On this day, we also remember the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought alongside Hassan in the quest for freedom and independence. It is also a time to reflect on the progress and challenges our country has faced since achieving independence, and to renew our commitment to work towards a peaceful and prosperous Somalia. As we celebrate Mohammed Abdullah Hassan Day, let us carry on his legacy of resilience, determination, and love for our nation. We must also continue to educate the younger generation about Hassan’s teachings and values, ensuring that his vision for a united and free Somalia lives on. In the words of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, ‘We have learned that life is not about sitting and waiting for change to happen; it is about getting up and making that change happen.’ Let us honor his memory by actively working towards a better future for Somalia, guided by his principles of unity, justice, and perseverance.
