Europe Day – May 9: Celebrating European Unity

Europe Day, observed every year on May 9, is a significant occasion dedicated to promoting peace, unity, and cooperation across the continent. This day commemorates the historic Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the groundwork for the creation of the European Union (EU). Named after Robert Schuman, then French Foreign Minister, the declaration proposed a new model of political collaboration that would make war between historic rivals France and Germany “not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible.”
