The History of International Women’s Day

In 1908, about 15,000 women marched through New York City, demanding better working conditions, shorter hours, and the right to vote. The following year, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Women’s Day, celebrated on February 28.

In 1910, at an International Women’s Conference, the idea of an International Women’s Day was formally proposed. The first official International Women’s Day took place on March 19, 1911, with more than a million women and men attending rallies to advocate for women’s right to vote, work, and hold public office.
