January 7 – Freetown Marathon: A Celebration of Unity and Resilience

The Freetown Marathon, also known as the Sierra Leone Marathon, is an inspiring annual event held in the heart of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown. Taking place every year on January 7th—the anniversary of the end of Sierra Leone’s civil war—the marathon is far more than a race. It stands as a powerful symbol of unity and resilience, while also raising crucial funds for local charities dedicated to improving lives across the country.

Since its founding, the Freetown Marathon has welcomed thousands of participants from more than 30 countries, making it one of Sierra Leone’s most significant and well-attended sporting events. Runners, supporters, and spectators come together to celebrate hope, healing, and the enduring spirit of community.

The event is organized by StreetChild, a UK-based charity supporting vulnerable children, in partnership with the Sierra Leone Athletics Association. Their shared mission is to raise funds for the education and reintegration of children affected by the civil war, opening doors to brighter futures. Since 2008, StreetChild has worked tirelessly in Sierra Leone, with the marathon serving as its largest fundraising initiative.
