October/November – Diwali (Hindu Festival of Lights)

The months of October and November are filled with excitement and joy among the Hindu community as it marks the celebration of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a five-day long celebration that signifies the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness.

The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’, meaning a row of lamps. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik, which falls in either October or November according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated in different parts of India and also in various countries where Hindus have a presence.

During Diwali, people decorate their homes with diyas (clay lamps), lights, and rangolis (colored patterns made on the floor). It is believed that these decorations welcome prosperity and happiness into the household. The festival also brings along mouth-watering sweets, delicious food, and sparkling firecrackers that light up the sky.

The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras, which is a time for purchasing new items, especially gold and silver, as it is believed to bring good luck. The second day is called Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi and marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. The third day is the main day of Diwali where families come together to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. The fourth day is known as Govardhan Puja, which is dedicated to Lord Krishna and the fifth day is Bhai Dooj, a day to celebrate the bond of love between brothers and sisters.

Every aspect of Diwali carries a deeper significance and holds a special place in the hearts of people.

The festival starts with cleaning and decorating homes, which symbolizes the removal of negative energies and welcoming of positive vibes.

The lighting of diyas is a symbol of hope and enlightenment, and it is believed to ward off evil and bring blessings into the home.

During Diwali, people dress up in their traditional attire and visit friends and family, exchange gifts and sweets, and indulge in festive delicacies.

The colorful rangolis that adorn the entrance of homes are believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Diwali is not just limited to Hindus, but it is also celebrated by people from other religions, showcasing the unity and diversity of India.

The festival also has a significant effect on the economy, as it leads to a boost in sales of various products and services.

However, in recent years, the harmful effects of firecrackers have caused concern, and many people are opting for eco-friendly ways of celebration.

This Diwali, let us come together to spread love, happiness, and positivity, and make it a safe and memorable celebration for everyone.

Wishing you all a very Happy Diwali! May the light of Diwali brighten your life with joy, peace, and prosperity.
