From political leaders and soldiers to activists and everyday citizens, our national heroes have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire us all.
The History of National Heroes Day
National Heroes Day traces its origins to 1937, when President Manuel L. Quezon declared November 30 as the official day to honor the nation’s heroes. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of one of the Philippines’ most revered figures, Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan and leader of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule.
In 1989, President Corazon Aquino moved the celebration to the fourth Monday of August through Proclamation No. 374. However, in 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte reinstated the observance of National Heroes Day on November 30. Despite these changes, the day remains a vital occasion to recognize the valor and sacrifices of our nation’s heroes.
