Feast of the Virgin of Charity – September 8: Honoring the Patron Saint of Cuba
Every year on September 8, Catholics around the world come together to celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Charity, also known as Our Lady of El Cobre. The fishermen took it as a sign of divine intervention and brought the statue to the land, where it was placed in a small chapel on the El Cobre hill in Santiago de Cuba.
Since then, the Virgin of Charity has been a symbol of hope, protection, and unity for the people of Cuba.
The statue, made of bronze and measuring only 16 inches tall, is believed to have miraculous powers and is said to have performed many miracles over the years.
On September 8, thousands of pilgrims from all over Cuba, and even from other countries, make their way to the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity in El Cobre to pay their respects to the patron saint of Cuba.
The celebrations start with a traditional mass, followed by a procession where the statue of the Virgin is carried on a float adorned with flowers and ribbons, accompanied by music and dance.
The festivities continue with a fiesta popular, or popular party, where locals and visitors indulge in traditional Cuban food, drinks, and music, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
It is believed that prayers to the Virgin of Charity are answered, and many devotees make promises or offerings to her, especially for cures or the fulfillment of a cherished wish.
As the Virgin of Charity is also known as ‘La Mambisa’, a Cuban term for a female warrior, the feast day is marked by a reenactment of the historic uprising of the Mambises, Cuba’s first independence fighters, against the Spanish rule.
The annual feast of the Virgin of Charity is an important day for Cubans to come together as a community and celebrate their faith, culture, and history.
