Experience the Magic of Ziemassvētki: December 25-26

The most wonderful time of the year is here! The holiday season is in full swing and everyone seems to be in a jolly mood. It’s that time of the year when we get to spend quality time with our loved ones, exchange gifts and indulge in delicious food. Yes, you guessed it right, we are talking about Ziemassvētki, also known as Christmas in Latvia. This special holiday is celebrated on December 25-26 and has a rich history and traditions attached to it.

Ziemassvētki has been celebrated in Latvia since the 16th century.

The word Ziemassvētki comes from the words ‘ziema’, meaning winter, and ‘svētki’, meaning celebration.

Latvians believe that Ziemassvētki is a time for miracles, love and giving.

Christmas Eve, which is also known as ‘Mazie Ziemassvētki’ or ‘Little Ziemassvētki’, is a time for family gatherings and festive meals.

The traditional dishes served during Christmas include grey peas with bacon, gingerbread cookies, and a delicious Christmas bread called ‘Rupjmaize’.

A popular tradition during Ziemassvētki is to light candles on Christmas Eve and place them on windowsills to guide the spirits of loved ones who have passed away back home.

Christmas morning is filled with excitement as children wake up to gifts under the Christmas tree.

One of the most beloved traditions of Ziemassvētki is the ‘šūpuļdziesmas’ or Christmas carols that are sung throughout the holiday season.

On December 26, Latvians also celebrate ‘Svētki’, which is a day dedicated to visiting friends and family.

During this time, it is also common for people to exchange small gifts and cards with their loved ones.

Ziemassvētki is incomplete without the iconic ‘Ziemassvētku egle’ or Christmas tree.

The first Christmas tree in Latvia was lit in 1510 by a monk from Riga’s Dome Church.

Today, the Christmas tree in Riga’s Town Square, also known as ‘Eglīte’, is the official Christmas tree of Latvia.

Visitors can also admire the beautifully decorated trees in other cities, like Jūrmala and Ventspils.

Ziemassvētki is truly a magical time in Latvia, with streets adorned with lights and decorations, and a festive atmosphere that is hard to resist.

So come and experience the warmth and joy of Ziemassvētki, and make unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

May this Ziemassvētki bring you love, peace, and happiness, and may the light of Christmas shine bright in your hearts throughout the year!
