History and Significance of Cetinje Monastery
Established in 1484, Cetinje Monastery is not only a religious sanctuary but also a symbol of Montenegrin identity. It served as the seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, the principal authority of the Orthodox Church in the region. Throughout the centuries, the monastery has played a vital role as both a spiritual center and a bastion of resistance during Montenegro’s struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the monastery takes its name from “Cetina,” referencing the abundant clear springs in the surrounding countryside. The complex includes the main church, two smaller chapels, a library, and a treasury that preserves invaluable religious objects and ancient manuscripts.
