May 3 – World Press Freedom Day: Celebrating the Power of a Free Press
Each year on May 3, the world marks World Press Freedom Day, a day dedicated to highlighting and defending the vital role of a free press. This observance not only celebrates journalistic independence but also reaffirms the rights of journalists to report news without fear, censorship, or undue influence. A free and independent press is essential to democracy, accountability, and the protection of human rights worldwide.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a UNESCO recommendation. The date commemorates the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, adopted by African journalists in 1991, which advocates for free, independent, and pluralistic media across the globe.
