14 March: International Day of Mathematics

Proclamation of the Day

Raising global awareness of the mathematical sciences is essential for addressing pressing challenges in fields such as artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, and sustainable development. Mathematics is a cornerstone for improving quality of life in both developed and developing nations. In recognition of its importance, UNESCO’s 40th General Conference officially proclaimed 14 March as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019 (40C/Resolution 30).

Notably, 14 March (3/14) has long been celebrated in many countries as Pi Day, honoring the mathematical constant π (pi), which is approximately 3.14—one of the most recognized constants in mathematics.

Aim of the Day

The International Day of Mathematics aims to showcase the essential role that mathematics plays in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also supports UNESCO’s two global priorities: Africa and Gender Equality. This day encourages people everywhere to celebrate the joy of mathematical discovery and the opportunities it offers to all, through a wide range of festive and educational activities around the world.

Some countries have recently declared mathematics to be “in crisis”, as students increasingly view the subject as boring. This day is a reminder of mathematics’ purpose—especially its role as the foundation for innovation and sustainable development. We recognize that mathematics, even in its most theoretical forms, truly concerns us all.
