25th February: Celebrating Republic Day

Featured ImageRepublic Day is a national event in many countries in which a nation commemorates the anniversary of when this republic was founded or when the country’s constitution was first enacted. The purpose of this day is to inspire citizens to remind themselves about the sacrifices made by their ancestors to establish their country as a free and democratic republic nation. 25th February is celebrated as Republic Day in Suriname and the Dominican Republic. The first Constitution of the Dominican Republic was adopted on 6th November 1844. Suriname’s declaration of independence from the Netherlands on 25th November 1975 was followed by the inauguration of its first President, Johan Ferrier, as Head of State. The flag of Suriname has five stars representing the five ethnic and cultural groups in the country. In the Dominican Republic, celebrations for Republic Day begin on 24th February and continue until 27th February, which is the date of the Battle of Independence against Haiti. On this day, government buildings are decorated with the national flag and people dress up in national colours. Schools and colleges organize cultural programs and competitions to honour their country. In Suriname, the main celebration takes place in the capital city of Paramaribo, where a grand parade with military and cultural displays is held. Suriname’s national anthem, ‘God zij met ons Suriname’ (God be with our Suriname), is sung and a 21-gun salute is fired. The Dominican Republic celebrates Republic Day with a military parade in the capital city of Santo Domingo, attended by government officials and foreign dignitaries. The day is also marked with speeches, patriotic songs, and the laying of wreaths at the National Pantheon. The theme for Suriname’s Republic Day in 2021 is ‘Stronger through Diversity’, highlighting the importance of the country’s multicultural society. The theme for the Dominican Republic’s Republic Day in 2021 is ‘The United Nation: A Commitment to Building a Better Future’, emphasizing their commitment to working together as a nation. Republic Day is a symbolic reminder of the sacrifices made by the people of these countries for their freedom and democracy. It also serves as a day to reflect on how far they have come and what they can do to continue building a better future for their nation.
