Kamuzu: The Early Years
Born in the village of Kasungu, Kamuzu was the son of a religious leader. After completing his early education in Malawi, he went on to pursue higher education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He also received a medical degree from the University of London. This academic background would later serve him in his political career as he was among the few educated Africans at the time.
The Fight for Independence
As an advocate for Black nationalism, Kamuzu returned to Malawi in the 1930s and joined the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC). He then became President of the party in 1958 and led the country to independence from British colonial rule on 6th July 1964. He took on the role of Malawi’s first Prime Minister and later became the country’s President in 1966.
