The Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) are the steadfast guardians of Brunei Darussalam’s sovereignty and security. Every year on 31 May, the nation comes together to honor the brave men and women of the RBAF during Armed Forces Day—a special occasion dedicated to recognizing their unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting the country and its people.
History and Evolution of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces
Founded in 1961, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces have been the cornerstone of Brunei’s defense and security for over six decades. Since their establishment, the RBAF have continuously adapted to meet the evolving security needs of the region, expanding and modernizing their capabilities to remain vigilant and responsive to any threat.
Today, the RBAF comprise three main branches:
- Royal Brunei Land Forces (RBLF): Responsible for ground defense operations and upholding territorial integrity.
- Royal Brunei Navy (RBN): Charged with maritime security, protecting Brunei’s waters, and ensuring safe sea lanes.
- Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF): Provides aerial defense and supports ground and naval operations through air power and reconnaissance.

Armed Forces Day Celebrations: A National Tribute
Armed Forces Day stands as one of Brunei’s most significant national events. The celebrations center around a grand parade at Taman Padang Perdana, also known as the Royal Ceremonial Grounds. This impressive event is attended by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei and Supreme Commander of the RBAF, who serves as the Royal Guest of Honor.
The parade highlights the professionalism and discipline of RBAF personnel. Notable features include:
- A formal march-past by the troops, showcasing their precision and training.
- A gun salute in honor of the nation’s armed forces and their
