The World Health Organization (WHO) also encourages member countries to promote physical activity to combat inactivity—a leading cause of death worldwide and a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Yoga transcends physical exercise. As the renowned yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar said, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in performing one’s actions.”

The first International Day of Yoga was celebrated on 21 June 2015. This date was chosen because it marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere—the longest day of the year—which holds special significance in many cultures and traditions.
