International Day of the African Child – June 16

The International Day of the African Child is observed each year on June 16 to raise awareness about the challenges facing African children and to promote their rights and well-being. Established by the Organization of African Unity in 1991, this day has been commemorated annually ever since.

June 16 holds special significance as it marks the anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa, when courageous students protested against the oppressive education system imposed under apartheid. Many lost their lives in the pursuit of equal access to education, and their bravery continues to inspire efforts to advance children’s rights across Africa.
