11-February International Day of Women and Girls in Science:
Origin of the Day:
In order to gain complete and equal rights for women in technology, the United Nations General Assembly adopted decision A/RES/70/212, maintaining 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Science and Gender:
Science and gender equality are each vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed improvement desires, which includes the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Before 15 years, the world community has made a variety of effort to inspire and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and ladies remain excluded from collaborating absolutely in technological know-how.
At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016), only around 30% of female select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally, students’ enrolment is low in ICT (3%), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8%).
Covid-19 Pandemic:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly established the vital role of women researchers in exclusive stages of the fight against COVID-19. From advancing the knowledge on the virus, to growing strategies for testing, and finally to creating the vaccine in opposition to the virus.
At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic additionally had a big negative effect on women scientists. Especially affecting those at the early ranges of their profession, and for that reason contributing to widening the gender gap in technological knowledge, and revealing the gender disparities in the clinical gadget. It needs to be addressed by new guidelines, initiatives and mechanisms to guide girls and women in science.
