World AIDS Day – December 1
World AIDS Day is an international observance day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease. It is celebrated on December 1st each year and was first observed in 1988. This day provides an opportunity to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. It also aims to educate and inform people about the disease and the progress that has been made in its treatment and prevention.
Since the first World AIDS Day, global progress has been made in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. According to UNAIDS, there were approximately 1.7 million new HIV infections in 2019, a 23% decline since 2010. UNAIDS also reports that there has been a 60% reduction in AIDS-related deaths since the peak in 2004.
Despite these achievements, the HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a global health challenge and there is still a lot of work to be done to end it. It is estimated that there are 38 million people living with HIV globally, with approximately 1.7 million new infections and 690,000 deaths related to AIDS in 2019.
Social stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier for people living with HIV, preventing them from accessing the treatment and support they need. World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to challenge these attitudes and stand in solidarity with those affected by HIV/AIDS.
This year, the theme for World AIDS Day is “Global solidarity, shared responsibility”. It calls on individuals, communities and world leaders to work together and take responsibility for the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It also highlights the role of global solidarity in ending the epidemic, as well as the importance of shared responsibility in achieving this goal.
Join us on December 1st to show your support, raise awareness and remember those affected by HIV/AIDS. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against this global health challenge.
