Celebrate April 9th with Festivity and Grace – A Reflection on Independence Day
Celebrate the Anniversary of Independence
09 April is an important day for Sri Lankans as we celebrate our independence from British colonial rule. Now, 73 years since gaining our freedom, we continue to commemorate this historic event with immense pride and joy. This day, also known as Independence Day, is an opportunity for us to remember and honour those who fought for our freedom, and to reflect on the progress our nation has made since then.
A Glorious History
Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon, was under British rule for nearly 150 years. The period of colonization was marked by heavy taxation, land expropriation, and other injustices, leading to repeated uprisings and rebellions. The struggle for independence, led by heroes such as D. S. Senanayake, Don Stephen, Dudley Senanayake, George E. de Silva, and F. R. Senanayake, culminated in 1947 with the country gaining its independence.
A Day for Remembrance
The 9th of April is a day to remember and honour those who sacrificed and fought for our freedom. It is also a day to pay our respects to all those who have served our country and continue to do so. We remember the bravery and heroism of our soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars, as well as those who fought in the Sri Lankan civil war. It is because of their sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedom today.
Celebrating Independence
Independence Day is a time for festivities and merriment. Schools, government buildings, and public spaces are adorned with the national flag and decorations symbolizing patriotism and pride. The main celebration takes place in Colombo, the capital city, at Independence Square, where the President hoists the national flag, delivers a speech, and parades are held to showcase the country’s cultural diversity and heritage.
Reflection on Progress
On this day, we also reflect on the progress that Sri Lanka has made since gaining independence. We have made great strides in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and continue to work towards achieving economic and social development.
