Commemorating the Enmore Martyrs on August 1: A Story of Struggle and Sacrifice

August 1 marks a significant day in the history of Guyana, as it commemorates the deaths of five brave sugar workers in 1948. This day is known as Enmore Martyrs Day, and it serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by these workers in the fight for better working conditions. The Enmore Martyrs were not just ordinary workers, but they were symbol of the resistance against oppression and injustice. Today, their legacy continues to inspire and empower generations to stand up for their rights and fight against oppression.

On August 1, 1948, the sugar workers of British Guiana (now known as Guyana) went on strike in the village of Enmore.

These workers were facing severe working conditions, including long hours, low wages, and poor living conditions.

They were also demanding an increase in wages and the right to form a union.

The strike was led by the Manpower Citizens’ Association (MPCA) and the Indian Political Pioneers (IPP), two organizations fighting for the rights of the sugar workers.

However, the colonial government responded by sending in the police force to suppress the strike.

On that fateful day, as the workers peacefully gathered to protest, the British Guiana Police Force opened fire on the crowd, killing five workers and injuring countless others.

Those five workers were Lallabagee Kissoon, Rambarran, Pooran, Surajballi, and Sohan.

These martyrs were not just fighting for better working conditions, but they were also fighting against the oppressive colonial system that exploited the Indian indentured laborers.

Their sacrifice sparked a powerful movement that led to the formation of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), which continues to fight for the rights of the workers in Guyana.

Since then, August 1 has been observed as a national holiday in Guyana, and Enmore Martyrs Day has become a significant day in the country’s history.

The Enmore martyrs may have lost their lives, but they left behind a legacy of resistance, courage, and determination.

Their bravery and sacrifice serve as a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is ongoing and requires the support and participation of all.

On this day, we pay tribute to the Enmore Martyrs and all the workers who have sacrificed their lives in the struggle for better working conditions and a more just society.

Their story must not be forgotten, and their spirits must continue to inspire us to fight against oppression and inequality.

The Enmore Martyrs may have died, but their memory will live on forever in the hearts of the people.
