Celebrate the Upcoming Holidays: Hanukkah and the Feast of Saint Agnes

As December approaches, many eagerly anticipate the holiday season—a time rich with tradition, reflection, and celebration. Among the season’s most meaningful observances are Hanukkah and the Feast of Saint Agnes. Both holidays hold special significance in their respective religious and cultural calendars, offering opportunities for gathering, gratitude, and remembrance. This article explores the origins, traditions, and significance of these holidays, helping you celebrate with deeper understanding and appreciation.

Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights

Hanukkah, known as the Festival of Lights, is a beloved Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration during the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century BCE. Central to Hanukkah is the miracle of the oil: though there was only enough oil to light the Temple’s menorah for one day, it lasted for eight.

The Hanukkah celebration spans eight days and nights, beginning on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar—typically in December. In 2024, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 10 and concludes on December 18.

Hanukkah Traditions

  • Lighting the Menorah: Each night, families light an additional candle on the nine-branched menorah. The central candle, the shamash, is used to light the others. By the eighth night, all candles are aglow, symbolizing hope and perseverance.
  • Playing Dreidel: Dreidel, a spinning top game marked with Hebrew letters, is played with chocolate coins or small tokens, adding joy to the festivities.
  • Exchanging Gifts: Many families exchange gifts throughout Hanukkah, fostering joy and togetherness.
  • Enjoying Traditional Foods: Fried foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts) are enjoyed in honor of the oil miracle.
  • Giving Tzedakah: Charitable giving, or tzedakah, is encouraged during Hanukkah to support those in need and strengthen community
