Flag Day, also known as National Flag Day, is an annual observance dedicated to commemorating the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. The History of Flag Day
The origins of Flag Day date back to 1885, when Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, proposed observing June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” He encouraged his students to reflect on the anniversary of the flag’s adoption by writing essays and poems about its importance. Cigrand’s idea quickly gained momentum nationwide.
By 1891, New York’s State Board of Education officially recognized Flag Day. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation designating June 14 as National Flag Day. It was not until August 3, 1949, however, that President Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress formally establishing June 14 as National Flag Day. Notably, this date also marks the birthday of the United States Army.
