Celebrate Lag BaOmer this May 23: A Joyous Jewish Holiday

Lag BaOmer is a significant Jewish holiday that is celebrated on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, which falls on May 23 this year. It is a joyous occasion that commemorates the deaths of thousands of students of Rabbi Akiva, who were spared from a plague that was ravaging the land. It is believed that on this day, the plague stopped and peace was restored. The name Lag BaOmer comes from the numerical value of the Hebrew letters, lamed and gimel, which equal 33. Therefore, Lag BaOmer means “33rd day of the Omer”.

The Omer is a period of 49 days between the Jewish holidays of Passover and Shavuot. During this time, mourning customs are observed, and weddings and other joyous celebrations are avoided.

On Lag BaOmer, the mourning customs are lifted, and there is a sense of joy and celebration in the air.

In addition to these customs, Lag BaOmer is also celebrated by feasting on traditional Jewish foods, such as gefilte fish, challah bread, and pastries like rugelach and babka.

One of the most beautiful and colorful customs of Lag BaOmer is the procession of children, with their faces painted in honor of the holiday. This custom originates from the belief that the children of Rabbi Akiva’s students were the ones to bring light into the world, and therefore, their joy and innocence are celebrated on this day.
