How We Celebrate July 24 – Armed Forces Day
In Honour of Our Brave Soldiers
In many countries around the world, July 24th is celebrated as the Armed Forces Day. This day is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving in the military. Armed Forces Day is a special day to salute and appreciate the sacrifices and dedication of these courageous individuals who defend their country and its people from harm’s way.
The History of Armed Forces Day
The history of this day goes back to 1949 when then-Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson declared the first Armed Forces Day to honor and salute all branches of the United States military. It was established as an official and combined celebration of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. President Harry S. Truman also signed the proclamation declaring the creation of a day to pay tribute to the men and women in uniform across all military branches and to raise public awareness of their all-encompassing role.
Armed Forces Day replaced the separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days, which were celebrated in previous years. The special celebration is now observed on the third Saturday every May to recognize all current and former members of the military and honor their selfless services.
