Ohrid Lake Swimming Marathon: A Marathon Like No Other
Nestled in the heart of Macedonia, Ohrid Lake is the largest and deepest lake in the Balkans and one of the oldest in Europe. With its crystal-clear waters, breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and abundant wildlife, Ohrid Lake is a cherished destination for both tourists and locals.
Every August, the Ohrid Lake Swimming Marathon draws swimmers from around the world to participate in a truly unique and demanding event that has been a tradition for over 36 years. Known as the “Swimming Marathon on the Road of Ancient Romans”, this 30-kilometer open water race unfolds against the stunning backdrop of Ohrid’s historic landscape.
The Historic Setting of Ohrid
The marathon is set in the picturesque town of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its ancient churches and monasteries, some dating back to the 9th century. The town’s deep-rooted culture and history provide a remarkable setting, blending athletic achievement with tradition.
The race begins at the Monastery of St. Naum, located at the southern tip of Ohrid Lake. Swimmers then follow the scenic shoreline, passing iconic landmarks such as Ohrid’s Old Town, the historic St. Sophia Church, and the imposing Ohrid Fortress. The finish line awaits at the Small Bay of Kaneo, where athletes are greeted by enthusiastic crowds and a festive atmosphere.
