Born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, Saint Anthony was originally named Fernando Martins de Bulhões. From an early age, he felt a profound spiritual calling, entering the Augustinian order at just 15. Later, he joined the newly established Franciscan order, where his powerful preaching and steadfast devotion to God earned him widespread respect. His remarkable ability to convert skeptics and heretics earned him the title “the Hammer of Heretics.”
